"Since breaking into the Canadian theatre scene in the 1970s with his play Memoir, he has become an influential force in our culture," said the citation for the Order. "Farther West, Waiting for the Parade, and New World form a trilogy that continues to engage audiences across the country with stories that explore the complexity of the Canadian identity."

"Not only is he a magnificent playwright, but his influence extends beyond the stage. John seizes every opportunity to promote and nurture new talent. His work at The Banff Centre has mentored countless young artists, and of course his plays delight and inspire us as Canadians and in performances around the world."

John Murrell is one of Canada’s most frequently produced playwrights, with his work having been translated into more than 15 languages for performances in more than 35 countries around the world. Earlier in 2002, Murrell was awarded the 2002 Walter Carson Award for Excellence in the Performing Arts and named to the Alberta Order of Excellence.
