John Murrell named Officer to the Order of Canada

John Murrell, artistic director/executive producer of Theatre Arts at The Banff Centre, and one of Canada’s most prominent playwrights, has been appointed to Officer of the Order of Canada. This is Canada’s highest civil honour for lifetime achievement, recognizing people who have made a difference to our country. Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson announced 100 new appointments to the Order today naming 33 people as officers and 68 as members.

"Since breaking into the Canadian theatre scene in the 1970s with his play Memoir, he has become an influential force in our culture," said the citation for the Order. "Farther West, Waiting for the Parade, and New World form a trilogy that continues to engage audiences across the country with stories that explore the complexity of the Canadian identity."

"We are thrilled and proud that John has been appointed to Officer of the Order of Canada," says Banff Centre president and CEO Mary Hofstetter. "Not only is he a magnificent playwright, but his influence extends beyond the stage. John seizes every opportunity to promote and nurture new talent. His work at The Banff Centre has mentored countless young artists, and of course his plays delight and inspire us as Canadians and in performances around the world."

John Murrell is one of Canada’s most frequently produced playwrights, with his work having been translated into more than 15 languages for performances in more than 35 countries around the world. Earlier in 2002, Murrell was awarded the 2002 Walter Carson Award for Excellence in the Performing Arts and named to the Alberta Order of Excellence.

His latest work, the libretto for the Canadian opera Filumena, is co-commissioned by the Calgary Opera Association and The Banff Centre, and is set to music by the outstanding young Canadian composer John Estacio. Filumena concerns a controversial murder trial in the early days of Italian immigration to the Canadian Rockies, and will premiere at the Calgary Opera this February. It will be staged at the Banff Arts Festival during the summer of 2003.
