Ted Kennedy Jr. headlines international cancer conference
|
Ted Kennedy Jr. – a cancer survivor
diagnosed with the disease at age 12 – will be the keynote speaker on Thursday,
April 24 at a conference at The Banff Centre that will attract more than 700
international physicians and health care workers dedicated to helping people
cope with cancer. The 6th World Congress of Psycho-Oncology, running Tuesday, April 22 to Sunday, April 27 at The Banff Centre, will bring experts from around the world together for discussions on psycho-social cancer research, advocacy, clinical care, and professional alliances. Kennedy will talk about the challenges and opportunities of psychosocial support in the modern health care system. "Although I had access to the finest medical treatment, there was little
attention paid to my emotional and psychological well-being," says Kennedy,
whose leg was amputated as the result of his cancer. "There were no support
groups or other forms of support. I experienced the same emotional isolation and
lack of self-esteem that many cancer survivors experience." As an attorney specializing in health and disability law, Kennedy says he is committed to expanding access to evidence-based psychological and emotional support for people with cancer. "All of us – as professionals, patients and advocates – must join together to mobilize the health care system to respond to the critical needs of cancer survivors and address the long-term effects of a cancer diagnosis." The conference is presented by the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology, the American Psychosocial Oncology Society, the International Psycho-Oncology Society, and The Wellness Community. |
