Toronto event raises important funds for Banff Centre new media programs
The Banff Centre's contribution to the arts and new media was both celebrated
and supported at the Centre's 8th annual Toronto area fundraiser last week. The
event, entitled Eat•Witness•Play, attracted 140 Banff Centre alumni, supporters,
and new media leaders to The Boiler House Restaurant in Toronto's new Distillery
Historic District on Monday, November 17.
Eat•Witness•Play showcased the Centre's
Banff New Media Institute (BNMI) and was
hosted by Lillyann Goldstein, president of @Wallace Studios, partner in the
Distillery District Development, and an alumna of BNMI's Corus New Media
Accelerator Course. Banff Centre president & CEO Mary Hofstetter and Sara
Diamond, artistic director/executive producer, Media & Visual Arts, gave short
presentations.
Also featured was HorizonZero, Canada's online digital arts and culture
magazine, jointly produced by BNMI and the Department of Canadian Heritage.
Images from the HorizonZero Web site were projected on two large plasma screens,
creating an electric ambience for the event.
Attendees also enjoyed an art auction, jazz by the Melissa Stylianou Trio, and a
presentation by diginiche and the MZTV Museum of Television.
Honourary patrons for Eat•Witness•Play included filmmaker Veronica Tennant,
director Larry Weinstein, television guru Moses Znaimer, CHUM Interactive head
Roma Khanna, and Martha Ladly, director of HorizonZero.
The Banff Centre is Canada's only learning centre dedicated to the arts,
leadership development, and mountain culture. The Banff New Media Institute is a
world-class research and content innovation centre that brings artists and
cultural industry workers together with scientists, social scientists, and
humanists. Year-round BNMI activities and events include workshops,
co-productions, project commissions, academic exchanges, and themed summits.
All proceeds from the event support arts program scholarships at The Banff
Centre. For more information visit The Banff Centre Web site at
