The Banff Centre is pleased to announce the appointment of Sara Diamond, artistic director of Media & Visual Arts, to the newly created position of director of research. As director of research, Diamond will be responsible for developing and coordinating research initiatives across The Banff Centre, and for leading collaborations with the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) at The Banff Centre, creating new initiatives in mathematics and culture.

"I am confident Sara Diamond’s expertise and experience will foster new developments in arts and science research across The Banff Centre," says Joanne Morrow, vice president of programming at The Banff Centre.

Diamond’s responsibilities include direct leadership of research programs and projects for Media & Visual Arts, coordinating research initiatives across The Banff Centre, creating research partnerships with universities, colleges, business, and government, and leading specific research initiatives in new media. In the role of artistic director, she will continue to provide overall leadership to Media & Visual Arts at The Banff Centre.

Sara Diamond is an award winning artist, educator, and curator. She has led the Centre’s Banff New Media Institute since its inception in 1995, including its research in art and science. Under Diamond’s leadership, The Banff Centre recently opened the A(rt) R(esearch) & T(echnology) Advanced Visualization Lab.

Diamond continues to create new media art and visualization software, with a current interest in wearable computing. She contributes to theoretical publications and dialogues in computer media and acts as an international new media strategist and consultant. As well as her extensive history with The Banff Centre, she is an Adjunct Professor with the University of California’s prestigious Design/Media program and has taught at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and the California Institute for the Arts.
