Call for nominations for 2004 Banff Centre National Arts Prize

The Banff Centre is accepting nominations for the 2004 National Arts Prize in the field of literary arts. The prize will recognize a Canadian who has made a significant contribution to the development of literary arts in Canada.

The National Arts Prize consists of a $5,000 cash prize and a two-week residency at The Banff Centre, and rotates each year among the fields of Literary Arts (including Playwriting), Media and Visual Arts, Theatre or Dance, Music or Opera, and Aboriginal Arts. The Banff Centre has presented the National Arts Prize since 1980. From 1951 to 1979 the award was presented by the University of Alberta.

Previous recipients have included Timothy Findley (1998), Denys Arcand (1991), Douglas Cardinal, OC (1990), Robertson Davies (1986), R. Murray Schafer (1985), Margaret Laurence (1983), W.O. Witchell (1980).

The 2004 prize is open to Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, resident in Canada for the last five years, who have demonstrated achievement in the field of literary arts and who are dedicated to the encouragement of others and the development of the next generation of artists. The deadline for nominations is April 26, 2004.
