For immediate release December 21, 2004 Oscar Lopez kicks off 2005 at The Banff Centre
Oscar Lopez makes a welcome return to The Banff Centre’s Eric Harvie Theatre for one show on January 8 at 8 p.m. Lopez’s unique latin guitar sound has made him a stand-out on the world music scene, and he’s never afraid to venture into different genres. Incorporating jazz, blues, and pop sensibilities into his music, he consistently lets loose the passion and fire within his soul through his fingertips and on his guitar strings. Born in Santiago, Chile, Lopez moved to Canada in 1979 and has called Calgary home for many years. “My roots are here,” he says. “I have adapted myself, learned the language, and I am an active part of this society. Of course, all that I am I owe to my mother country — she made me what I am today. There is always a strong Latin beat in my music, because that’s who I am.” With a deep commitment to his art, he has produced several superb recordings, and won a Juno award, critical praise, and thousands of devoted fans who have filled theatres across the country. Accompanied by Manuel Jara, Hugh MacMillan, and Raphael Geronimo, this is a welcome return for one of our favourite artists. The Banff Centre’s Playbill Series continues through May with performances by artists including Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul (January 22), Montreal Danse (January 28), Mae Moore and Lester Quitzau (February 18), Habib Koité (March 11), Orchid Ensemble (March 13), Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (April 2), John Hammond (April 9), Jeff Healey (April 22), Harry Manx (April 23), and Jesse Cook (May 20).
