Robbins (United States)

Royal
Robbins is an internationally famous climber and adventure kayaker. His climbs include
many first ascents in North America and in the Alps. In 1957, he made the first ascent of
the Northwest Face of Half Dome, and has made first ascents of the three great faces on El
Capitan in Yosemite Valley. His river runs include first descents of 30 rivers in
California and Chile.
Royal joined Modesto Rotary in 1988 and was its first
chairman of the Preserve Planet Earth Committee. He is also an honorary member of the
American Alpine Club. His biography, Royal Robbins - Spirit Of The Age, by climbing
author Pat Ament, was published in October 1992. In 1993, he received an Outstanding
Leadership Award from the Outdoor Industry. He is on the board of directors of Stanislaus
Partners in Education, a business/education coalition in Stanislaus County, California. In
1997 he was honored with the Sam Walton Business Leader award, and in 1998 he received the
Citizen of the Year award from the Modesto Chamber of Commerce. He is the president-elect
of the Modesto Rotary Club, to serve his term beginning July 2000.
Royal and his wife, Liz, who has shared his life of
adventure, own the Royal Robbins Company. They specialize in creating outdoor and travel
clothing for those who wander near and far, seeking adventure. They have four company
stores, one of which, the Royal Robbins Factory Outlet, is located at 10th and Needham
Streets in downtown Modesto.
