Andy Parkin
World class mountaineer Andy Parkin brings his interactive
"camp" of maps, tents, canvases, watercolours and
pastels to Banff for the Banff Mountain Summit. Holed up in a bivi
tent in life-threatening storms or just stuck in base camp during
bad weather, Andy uses the time to paint murals on the inner
fabric of tents. He captures the intensity of moments most of us
have nightmares about and creates unique artistic records of his
many journeys in these temporary homes and his creative response
to extreme landscapes.
Chris Rainier
Chris Rainier’s Ancient Cultures, Ancient Marks
photography exhibition explores cultures living outside the
parameters of our modern world. Far beyond the end of the road,
deep in the forests where the chainsaws have not yet felled the
last of the trees are people whose daily lives are intricately
woven with nature. Through these photographs Rainier documents
these cultures and their relationship with the landscape around
them. In his own words: "It is my purpose with these
photographs to celebrate what it means to be human and to have a
culture still rich with the myths and mystery of being
human."
Chris Rainier is considered one of the leading
documentary photographers working today. His mysterious images of
sacred places and indigenous peoples of the planet have been seen
in leading publications including: Time, Life, National
Geographic publications, Outside, Conde Nast
Traveler, The New York Times, Smithsonian,
Men’s Journal, Islands, The New Yorker and French
Geo. His photographs and books have been widely exhibited and
collected around the world, and he has received countless awards
for his photography, including five Picture of the Year awards for
his continued documentation of vanishing tribes, a Communication
Arts award for his last book on New Guinea, and an International
Golden Light Award in 1994 for his first book, Keepers of the
Spirit. Chris was recently included in American Photo
Magazine’s "100 most influential people working in
photography today" list.
Bradford Washburn
An exhibition of images taken by renowned mountaineer,
explorer, cartographer and aerial photographer Bradford Washburn.
Travelling the world for over eight decades, Washburn surmounted
physical and technical challenges to create awe-inspiring aerial images of remote, high places
- from the Grand Canyon to the
Alps, from Mount McKinley to Mount Everest.
Clifford S. Ackley of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston says of
Washburn's images "While retaining their historical
documentary value [Washburn's photographs] can nevertheless be
appreciated for their surprising, sometimes dizzying spaces, for
the intricate interplay of light and shadow over pristine blankets
of snow, for their revelation of natural textures and patterns of
startlingly abstract beauty."
