Natural World: Caribou and Wolves — The Endless Dance

UK, 2004, 49 minutes
Produced by Jeff Turner, Sue Turner

Caribou are fast, powerful, and highly adapted to the demands of a life on the run across the vast landscape of Arctic Canada. The endless journey of the caribou is led by the females, who are driven by the demands of mother-hood. The journey to give birth and to raise and guide their calves through their first year is so fraught with obstacles that many of them do not survive it. The caribou are dogged by a predator equally suited to this harsh land — the wolf. Thousands of wolves range across the Arctic tundra, relying almost completely on the caribou. Wolves and caribou share an intimate life-and-death relationship.

L’homme qui revient de haut (Return from the Heights)

France, 2004, 26 minutes
Directed by Gilles Perret
Produced by Evelyne July

Holder of the speed record for climbing Everest without supplemental oxygen, French alpinist Marc Batard spent a tortured 30 years searching for himself — or perhaps running from himself — among the high peaks. Finally, at 48, having come to the realization that he is a homosexual, and despite lingering fears of being misunderstood within the mountain community, he was able to achieve inner harmony. In this film, Batard explains his journey.
