Conservation of globally important biodiversity of montane forest and paramo ecosystems in the Colombian Massif
Marcela Cañón
In most cases, natural sciences do not work closely with human and social issues as part of an overall conservation strategy. In a country such as Colombia, the root causes of biodiversity loss are intimately involved with social and economic problems. We needed to develop an interdisciplinary approach to conserve biodiversity.

The goal of the project is to promote the sustainable development of the Colombian Massif by controlling natural resource exploitation, improving watershed management, alleviating poverty, and raising living conditions. The definition of the objectives of the project was undertaken with the participation of indigenous authorities and communities, environmental authorities, non-governmental organizations, some territorial institutions, municipalities and the teams of other projects.

Interdisciplinarity has been accomplished through the close work between different professionals and community representatives as well as the recognition and consideration of different knowledge systems.
