Policy Oriented Conservation Design, Y2Y and Grizzly Bears
Troy Merrill, LTB Institute of Landscape Ecology
The Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative promotes a bold vision for the Northern Rocky Mountains of North America. “Combining science and stewardship, we seek to ensure that the world- renowned wilderness, wildlife, native plants, and natural processes of the Yellowstone to Yukon region continue to function as an interconnected web of life, capable of supporting all of the natural and human communities that reside within it, for now and for future generations.” This vision can be realized only if Y2Y avoids the ‘fallacy of insight’ – the belief that understanding a problem is equivalent to solving a problem. To date Y2Y has taken an interdisciplinary approach to develop understanding of what needs to be done in order to achieve their goals. An expanded interdisciplinary approach is now being employed to define how to do it. This interdisciplinary approach is illustrated a case study describing the development of Y2Y’s grizzly bear conservation strategy.
