Jonathan Mitchley
Jonathan Mitchley graduated in 1979 with BSc in Botany
from the School of Plant Biology, University College of
North Wales Bangor. Following this, he went to work with
Dr. Peter Grubb at the Botany School, University of
Cambridge, on the control of relative abundance of
perennials in chalk grassland, and was awarded his PhD
in 1985, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship funded
by the Royal Society, London, to work in the Department
of Plant Ecology, University of Utrecht, The
Netherlands, with Dr. Jo Willems on the conservation
management of chalk grassland. In 1989, Dr. Mitchley
obtained a second post-doctoral fellowship, this time
funded by the UK Nature Conservancy Council, to work
with Dr. Andrew Malloch and Dr. John Rodwell at the
University of Lancaster, on the conservation management
of sea-cliff vegetation in Great Britain.
In 1999, he accepted a permanent post as Lecturer in
Ecology in the Environment Section of Wye College,
University of London, since merged with Imperial College
London. He is now Senior Lecturer in Ecology and
Biodiversity in the Department of Agricultural Sciences,
Imperial College, Wye campus.
His research interests involve landscape ecology and
biodiversity conservation and his main research goal is
to apply ecological principles to conservation and
restoration of biodiversity in the agricultural
landscapes of Europe. He has a keen interest in policy
relevant research and in the role of interdisciplinary
research for integrating conservation and livelihoods in
agricultural landscapes.
He is a Member of the International Association for
Landscape Ecology, Institute of Ecology and
Environmental Management, British Ecological Society and
British Grassland Society.
