Poster Title:
Biogeoclimatic Classification of High Elevation Ecosystems in
British Columbia.
Poster Abstract: The biogeoclimatic ecosystem
classification (BEC) system is a widely used management tool in
British Columbia that describes climatic zones and site types
using climax/mature plant communities as indicators of
environmental quality. The classification has been widely applied
for myriad applications requiring an understanding of biological
communities and site potential. Even though the alpine tundra and
adjacent high subalpine occupies over 150,000 km2, making it the
largest climatic zone in British Columbia, it has received limited
attention to date. I will present a preliminary provincial
classification of high elevation subzones and some representative
ecosystems.
