Ralf Buckley

Professor Ralf Buckley is Director
of the International Centre for Ecotourism Research in the School
of Environmental and Applied Science at Griffith University,
Australia, and former Dean of Engineering and Applied Science. He
has published more than 200 articles in journals including Nature
and Science; 8 books, and more than 100 consultant reports.
His research interests include human transmission of waterborne
pathogens in protected areas. In the early 1990s he contributed to
design of backcountry protozoan sampling devices, and in 1994 he
predicted the protozoan contamination of Sydney's water supply
which subsequently occurred in 1998. During the 1990s he showed
that marsupials can transmit human-infective Giardia, and
that even the most pristine Australian watercourses now contain
low concentrations of pathogenic protozoa and bacteria. He
maintains a continuing interest in management of human waste from
adventure tourism and outdoor recreation. More info: www.gu.edu.au/centre/icer.
