Shawn Marshall

Shawn Marshall completed an undergraduate degree in Engineering
Physics at the University of Toronto in 1991 and proceeded
directly to graduate studies in Geophysics at the University of
British Columbia. Dr Marshall received his Ph.D. in Geophysics in
1996, with doctoral research in glaciology and paleoclimatology.
His Ph.D. work was awarded the Governor General's Gold Medal for
highest standing in the UBC graduating class, as well as a
national Doctoral Thesis Prize from the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Dr. Marshall
stayed on for postdoctoral research in UBC’s Department of Earth
and Ocean Sciences, probing further into Ice Age climate dynamics
as well as present-day glacier-climate interactions. He moved to
the University of Calgary in 2000, joining the Department of
Geography where he continues his work in glaciology and
climatology. His current research projects include glacier-climate
field studies in the Canadian Rockies and the Canadian Arctic, as
well as glacier dynamics studies in Greenland, Antarctica, and
Iceland. Dr. Marshall is a Scholar in the Canadian Institute for
Advanced Research (CIAR) Earth System Evolution Program and
is a recent recipient of a Canada Research Council Chair in Global
Process Modelling. He sits on the Council of the International
Glaciological Society and Chairs the American Geophysical Union’s
Snow, Ice, and Permafrost Section.
