Alejandro Velazquez

Jose Alejandro Velázquez Montes concluded his bachelor degree on
biology in 1984 at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM).
During 1985 he followed a diploma course in wildlife management in
Jersey , England. In 1987 he obtained his Masters degree on
Biological Sciences. From 1988 to 1989 he completed the diploma
course on landscape ecology at ITC, The Netherlands. Soon after
that, he started his PhD studies in the University of Amsterdam,
The Netherlands. In 1991, he stayed for one year as a guest
student at University of British Columbia, Canada specializing in
conservation biology. He concluded his PhD in 1993 as landscape
ecologist and from then on he has worked as a full time researcher
at the UNAM either in the Faculty of Science (head of the
laboratory of biogeography) and Institute of Geography. He has
participated as invited speaker in 35 international meetings, has
produced over 50 articles and three books on topics such as
landscape ecology, conservation and natural resource management.
Currently he is the head of the Department of Ecography and Land
use planning of the Institute of Geography UNAM.
