Mountain Communities Conference 2005: Speakers
Mayor Helen Klanderud moved to Aspen from Denver in 1971, with her four children who grew up in Aspen and attended Aspen Public Schools. Two of her sons currently live and work in Aspen. Helen has an extensive background in public service having served as a Pitkin County Commissioner from 1981 to 1987, on the Roaring Fork Transit Agency Board, Burlingame Housing, Inc., and on the City of Aspen’s Asset Management Committee.
Helen is an attorney and a licensed clinical social worker. She received her law degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, and serves on the board of Alpine Legal Services, a non-profit legal office serving residents who otherwise could not afford civil legal representation. She is a member of both the Pitkin County and the Colorado Bar Associations.
She was director of Touchstone Mental Health Clinic in Aspen from 1971 to 1976, and social worker for the Aspen public schools from 1971 to 1973. She was in private practice as a clinical social worker from 1976 to 1988, when she enrolled in law school.
Helen is a member of the executive committee of Aspen Institute Community Forum. She represents the city on the Roaring Fork Transit Authority Board, and the Aspen Chamber Resort Association Board. She is a member of the Aspen Rotary Club, and a member of Aspen Elks Lodge No. 224. Helen also holds a BA degree from St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana.
