Ecological Restoration, Habitat Rehabilitation and Ecological Sustainability – Transgrid High Voltage Transmission Lines in the Snowy and Brindabella Ranges
Stuart Johnston and Roger Good |
|
The clearing of vegetation and the disturbance/removal
of topsoil from TransGrid’s easements in the Snowy and
Brindabella Ranges in March 2001 presented a significant
rehabilitation challenge for TransGrid, the NSW national
Parks and Wildlife Service and NSW Soil Services. The
results of the work carried out needed to be in sympathy
with both national parks management objectives and the
maintenance needs of the transmission line easements.
From the extensive clearing and subsequent
rehabilitation program, and with the input experts from
a range of disciplines, many lessons in ecological
restoration have been learnt and guidelines for future
programs for both industry and conservation agencies
developed. Much has been gained from this opportunity to
apply ecological restoration principles to the
revegetation program and to develop sound
management/maintenance programs for the high voltage
transmission line easements that extend across the
Australian Alps. The lessons learnt from this project
are now also being applied in all aspects of easement
management across the whole of TransGrid’s assets across
South-Eastern Australia and are now being taught to and
applied by other utilities and government agencies
across Australia. |
