Ten Years After: The Banff Bow Valley Study
Judy Otton, Suzanne Bayley, Kim Endres, Mike McIvor, Brent Ritchie and Stephen Woodley
In 1994 the Minister responsible for Parks Canada commissioned a two-year study conducted by an external, interdisciplinary panel to evaluate the current state and potential futures for the Bow Valley in Banff National Park, Canada’s first and busiest national park. The panel established a “round-table” approach to obtain input from numerous local, provincial and national stakeholders. Existing ecological research was consulted and several new social science projects were conducted to prepare a “state-of-the-valley” for round table review. Stakeholders developed a vision statement for the BBV, and make recommendations on potential management actions for the panel’s final report to the Minister. Many of these recommendations formed the basis for the subsequent 1997 park management plan. This session will use a panel approach to discuss the study process, and significance to the BBVS to Banff and other Canadian national parks.
