Stuart Johnston
Stuart Johnston has 15 years’ experience working in
environmental management and research in the Australian
Alps. He has worked in the areas of alpine soil
morphology, geomorphology, rehabilitation, revegetation,
protected area management, erosion control, flora and
soil monitoring, the construction and maintenance of
electricity and resort infrastructure, the effects of
zinc toxicity on alpine ecosystems, track and drainage
design and visitor monitoring and interpretation within
the Snowy Mountains Region of Australia.
Stuart’s PhD thesis examined the “The principles of
alpine grassland ecosystem function and sustainability:
their intrinsic properties and thresholds to
disturbance”. He has published many scientific papers in
peer-reviewed journals on his work conducted in the
Australian Alps, and has represented Australia at
international conferences on mountain ecosystems, soils
and land management in the Snowy Mountains. Stuart is
currently the Environment and Property Manager for
TransGrid (Electricity Commission) – Southern NSW
including the Snowy Mountains region.
