Dr. Willebrand is the Program Director of a large interdisciplinary research program focussing on land use in the Swedish mountain range. The program has contracted about 18 researchers from different disciplines and universities in Sweden, and includes extensive stakeholder interaction.

He was previously the managing director of the research division of the Swedish Hunting Organization, a partly state-funded organization with broad responsibilities for practical wildlife management in Sweden.

Much of his research has focussed on population dynamics of wildlife but he has also collaborated in several studies on Human Dimensions of wildlife ecology. He is currently member of a parliamentary commission on hunting and fishing rights on state-owned land in the mountain region of Sweden.
