Andrew Querner: Untitled, Cirque of the Unclimbables
“After spending a comfortable night made interesting by a display of aurora borealis, Michael Henrichsen, Rich Cannings, and I awoke to inclement weather atop Pitch 8 of the Lotus Flower Tower in Canada’s Cirque of the Unclimbables. In this image, my uncertainty about completing the climb is reflected in the faces of my companions. Climbing in a remote alpine setting introduces a great number of variables, weather included, that can conspire to spoil a successful ascent. With alpine climbing, sometimes the only certainty is an overwhelming sense of ambiguity.”
Andrew Querner is an independent documentary photographer who has been following the culture of climbers for six years. This story remains central to his personal work and has spawned several ongoing relationships with magazines and commercial clients. Beyond his climbing work, Querner is drawn to general human-interest stories and under-reported issues of social concern. He lives in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.
