2007 – 2008 Online Contest Winner
Debbie Blum is a 43-year-old freelance journalist, living in the suburbs of Philadelphia with her husband, Andy, and their two boys, Aaron, 11, and Daniel, 9. Her attraction to the great outdoors was sealed the summer she turned 16 and went on a teen trip that included rock climbing in the Grand Tetons and an ascent of Mount Rainier. She calls herself a weekend warrior, weaving outdoor adventure, adrenaline sports, and travel into her lifestyle. Debbie says, “I cut my teeth learning trad climbing at Seneca Rocks, in West Virginia, and have since played on crags from New York (the Gunks) to British Columbia (Squamish). I mountain bike, kayak, ski — and am a jack of many trades (as long as they require a helmet), master of none.”
Weekends with her family often include hiking, biking, or whatever they can do to all be outside together. “We’ve even all been up a rock or two together — the world’s best feeling!” says Blum. “Travel, too, has always been in my blood, and before we started a family, Andy and I ticked off a lifelong dream — a 4-month trip around the world, that included highlights in Australia, Thailand, and Nepal.” Now, more settled with less time and money for travel, Debbie says she still keeps guidebooks for her dream trips on a special shelf. She is definitely an adventurer at heart, having been sky-diving and bungee-jumping also!
The Blums have been attending the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour for at least 14 or 15 years, first at the National Geographic screenings in Washington, DC, where they used to live – and now wherever the Philadelphia Rock Gym hosts it’s World Tour screening. Debbie says, “we’ve even got our boys hooked, although one of the films has inspired Aaron to want to try para-skiing, so I’m not so sure of the wisdom of introducing them to the electrifying outdoor culture captured so vividly at Banff!”
It appears that there couldn’t be a more appropriate and deserving winner than Debbie Blum and her husband Andy — and we wish them all the best on their next adventure together. Thank you World Expeditions!
Make sure you enter to win our 2009 Contest! Prizes include 13 day trip for two with World Expeditions, a Canadian Rockies ski escape, and a selection of prizes from our generous sponsors – including National Geographic, Mountain Hardware, New Balance, Patagonia, and more!
