Vera Frenkel’s video and installation works have addressed embedded assumptions as clues to the construction of consciousness, with a special focus on so-called “cargo-cult” practices as they inhabit consumer culture. This is Your Messiah Speaking alludes to the largest shopping mall in Europe and continues an inquiry into the relation between consumerism, messianism, and popular romance, each requiring the severing of the self from the senses. Her most recent work, Body Missing, completes in Linz, Austria, the boyhood home of Adolf Hitler, considers the implications of the proposed public face there of the art plundered by the Third Reich, the planned Fuehrermuseum and the works destined for it that are still missing.
