Zacharias Kunuk was born in 1957 at Kapuivik in the Iglooik area of the Northwest Territories. He worked as an independent carver of Inuit sculpture for ten years before becoming a producer for the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation in Iglooik where, since 1984, he has produced more than fifty video programs in the Inuktitut language for satellite broadcast throughout the Northwest Territories. He has created independent video productions which have been screened in Canada, Japan, Peru, Europe and the United States, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His videotapes have won numerous awards, including the Best Drama Award from the National Aboriginal Community Society in 1989 and the New Visionaries Award at the Two Rivers Film and Video Festival in Minneapolis in 1991. His work was recently selected for screening at Input 92,the Intenational Public Television conference in Baltimore. Contributor to: |
