Barbara Nickel's first book of poetry, The Gladys Elegies (Couteau 1997), won the Pat Lowther Memorial Award (1998), and her young adult novel The Secret Wish of Nannerl Mozart (Second Story Press 1996) was shortlisted for the Mr. Christie Book Award. A participant in the Writing Studio (1994 Rachel Wyatt), Nickel also won The Malahat Review Long Poem Prize (1995), and her work is included in Breathing Fire: Canada's New Poets. "Three Poems for Violin" originally appeared in Event.
