Jean Rysstad began writing fiction in 1985. She attended the Radio Drama Program (1989 Rachel Wyatt) and returned to Banff to work on fiction (1993 Rachel Wyatt and Edna Alford). "Contiguous" was written at the Writing Studio (1986, working with Sandra Birdsell and David Zieroth) and first published in the Windsor Review. The stories in her collections Travelling In (Oolichan 1990) and Home Fires (Harbour 1997) are primarily set in the north coast of BC, where Rysstad has lived for twenty-three years.
