The truly essential artists’ needs are tranquility and camaraderie. In the crisp Canadian autumn, three Icelandic artists who have been working with performance art, cinema, and music throughout their career (together and apart) will seek to inspire fellow artists with a situational, performative residency.
The Soiree Retreat residency is aimed at artists working with performance, video, music, painting, poetry…. ahhh who cares? It will be a retreat in the mountains for crazy work and constant intellectual stimulation. The residency will very much be in the romantic spirit with hikes and poetry readings. Soirees will be held once a week where participants will share their work and obsessions. It will be a contemporary idyll in a Rocky Mountain arcadia. Artists bound together by nature, blessed by the art goddess, reading Shelley out loud, and watching YouTube clips by the fire. The research will be situational. We will seek inspiration from the surroundings, as well as from the outside world we each inhabit and will bring with us.
The whole situation of being in Banff is a little performative, so why not take it to the max? Wagner and cigars! The Soiree Retreat will be a celebration of Banff, its ghosts, its banality, and most of all it will be a time for artistic tranquility and reflection.
