Program Information

Drawing on a 65-year legacy as one of Canada’s premier sites for creative development in dance, The Banff Centre’s Professional Dance program brings dancers to Banff for four weeks of intensive classes and rehearsals, followed by a week of mainstage performances that will include a new choreographic work as part of the annual Banff Summer Arts Festival. The program provides exceptional young professionals a place to experience the concept of life-long learning, and to discover creative applications of existing knowledge. The combination of new and existing choreography in the performance repertoire ensures that both the training and the rehearsal process focus on development of a performance product that is forward-looking, and relevant to the society it serves.

Building on the collaborative foundation that has inspired the Centre’s summer program in Professional Dance, the following professional ballet companies have been invited to nominate dancers for the 2014 program: The National Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Ballet B.C., Alberta Ballet, Le Jeune Ballet du Québec, Ballet Jörgen Canada, Boston Ballet, Ballet Victoria, and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens.

This year's repertoire includes: an excerpt from Divertimento No. 15 (Mozart/Balanchine), and Seventh Symphony (Beethoven/Van Schayk). Discussions are ongoing with Christopher Wheeldon to add one of his works to the program as well.

The Professional Dance program is directed by Lindsay Fischer. A former principal dancer, first with Het Nationale Ballet in the Netherlands and then with New York City Ballet, Fischer has spent the last 18 years overseeing the transition of young dancers into professional artists, most recently as the head of the National Ballet of Canada’s apprenticeship program.

The artistic team will include Je-an Salas, who will teach pilates the first week; Jean-Yves Esquerre, former artistic director of Les Ballets de Monte Carlo; Jacqueline Barrett, ballet mistress for Christopher Wheeldon; Toer van Schayk, the Arnold Sphor Distinguished Artist; Merrill Ashley, former principal dancer from New York City Ballet; and Mandy-Jayne Richardson, senior ballet mistress at the National Ballet of Canada.
