Program Information

"This experience went beyond all expectations I had about the centre. The staff were the height of professionalism, and always there to advise and help in all matters. I had an amazing time in Banff both as a huge learning curve and making so many contacts and friends."

2014 Theatre Production, Design and Stage Management Practicum program participant

For more than 60 years, Theatre Arts Production, Design, and Technology training programs have flourished at The Banff Centre. Our practicum training programs provide exceptional learning opportunities through the on-stage technical and design support of production residencies with resident companies, the building of original physical productions with partner companies, and the in-house creation of original main stage productions as part of The Banff Centre’s annual Summer Arts Festival.

Participants are guided by multiple creative and design teams working simultaneously in opera, dance, theatre, and interdisciplinary performance. Hands-on experiences are complemented by a competency-based training approach that identifies and tracks particular skills which the industry has identified as necessary to enter the profession.

Originally founded by eminent Hungarian designer Lazslo Funtek, our programs have trained and mentored thousands of theatre production practitioners who now work at nearly every Canadian opera, dance, and theatre company. These companies include Cirque Du Soleil, the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, the National Theatre School, the National Arts Centre, the National Ballet of Canada, and the Canadian Opera Company. Our alumni can also be found teaching and training at universities and colleges both nationally and internationally
