Banff Musicians in Residence | Early Fall
Program dates: September 21, 2015 - October 23, 2015
Application deadline: Extended to August 5, 2015
Applications to this program are now closed.
The Banff Musicians in Residence program provides emerging and established artists from the classical, jazz, singer songwriter, folk, pop, electronic and world traditions with a period of focused time to concentrate on artistic development. Residents are given the opportunity to expand their artistic insights through interaction with program peers and visiting artists.
Those interested in additional professional development can choose to apply for the role of Artistic Associate and act as the liaison between faculty and musicians for the duration of the program.
What does the program offer?
All residents have their own private studio space that they can access any time they wish for the duration of their stay (see Residency Length below). In addition to having the freedom to structure their time around the needs of their project, participants will receive artistic inspiration and career advice from well-established visiting artists who will be in residence at intervals throughout the program.
There are regular opportunities for performances on Banff Centre stages, as well as off campus (see Program Details).
Participants should be comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment to benefit the most from the program.
Who should apply?
This program is ideal for individual musicians, ensembles, bands, composers, and music researchers to spend focused time working on a specific project; creating new works; preparing for concerts, auditions or competitions; or exploring and researching innovative ideas. Participants should be comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment to benefit the most from the program.
Residency length can vary within the prescribed program dates. All residencies must begin on a Monday and last for a minimum of two weeks up to a maximum of five weeks. Musicians wishing to apply for other Banff Musicians in Residence programs (Late Fall, Winter) or concurrent Thematic Music Program (The Independent Music Residency) will have to indicate program preference and/or reason for a longer stay at the time of application.
An individual of exceptional musical ability and maturity will be offered a unique opportunity to be involved in the curation and delivery of the Banff Musicians in Residence | Early Fall program. The Artistic Associate will be acting as a liaison between the visiting artists, resident musicians as well as Music programming and production staff.
Coming from any musical background, though commanding a wide-ranging knowledge and interest in a variety of musical genres, the Artistic Associate will benefit from mentoring in artistic planning, program delivery, and rudiments of production. The Artistic Associate will be able to pursue their own personal project, however they will be expected to devote approximately half of their time toward their artistic associateship responsibilities. This is an opportunity for emerging artistic leaders wishing to develop their skills and network.
Applicants interested in this opportunity have to apply for Banff Musicians in Residence and submit a separate Letter of Intent explaining their motivation. Commitment to the full program duration is mandatory; applicants able to commit to more than one Banff Musicians in Residence program should clearly indicate their availability on the Letter of Intent. A remote interview might take place during the recruitment process.
The Artistic Associate will be offered a full scholarship to attend the program (tuition, room and board) as well as a weekly stipend and travel assistance.
All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of The Banff Centre.
