Programs at The Banff Centre

Leighton Artists’ Colony for Independent Residencies

Program dates: Ongoing

Program Information

These nine unique studios, each designed by a distinguished Canadian architect, are located in a secluded wooded area of The Banff Centre campus. The studios offer a concentrated, retreat environment to professional artists engaged in the creation of new work. Applications are accepted from artists of a variety of disciplines: writers, composers, singer-songwriters, visual artists, screenwriters, playwrights, literary translators, curators, art theorists, and professionals working in theatre, dance and film at the conceptualization or research stage of a project. Acceptance is based on an application/adjudication process.

Facilities

Each studio has a private view of the forest and is equipped with:

  • A PC or Macintosh computer with colour printer and internet access. Wireless internet access is also available for those bringing their own computers. Computer preference requests will be taken upon acceptance into the program. Subject to availability.
  • CD/cassette player
  • Kitchenette and washroom
  • Comfortable furnishings
  • Phone with voice mail

Four of the studios have pianos, four can accommodate writers, and two are designed with storage, lighting, and flexible space to accommodate visual artists. The studios appeal to a variety of disciplines, and some are large enough to accommodate collaborative projects.

Artists do not live in their studios. On-site accommodation consists of a private room with bath, telephone, TV, and housekeeping service. Artists have full access to the Paul D. Fleck Library and Archives, Dining Room, café, and fitness and recreation facilities at the Sally Borden Building. Access to technical support, equipment and additional production facilities may be available on a rental basis. Please submit specific requests when you apply.

Community and Environment

The Leighton Artists’ Colony is dedicated to providing a solitary retreat environment; however, there is a larger artistic community at The Banff Centre in which Leighton residents are welcome to participate. The Banff Centre also hosts hundreds of concerts, openings, exhibitions, and performances every year.

The Banff Centre and the Leighton Artists’ Colony are located on the side of a mountain and therefore present challenges to people with limited mobility. The Leighton Artists’ Colony is committed to improving accessibility and welcome questions about access or special needs.

How to Apply

All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of The Banff Centre.
