60th Anniversary Dance Endowment

In 2007, The Banff Centre will celebrate 60 years of contributing to dance. Since its inception, The Banff Centre dance program has influenced, nurtured and shaped dance in Canada and internationally. Alumni have founded professional dance companies, graced the world’s most exalted stages; and choreographed works that have become treasured by audiences world-wide.

Since its inception, the Summer Dance Program at The Banff Centre has been one of the top training programs for young dancers in North America. The program was founded in 1947 by Betty Farrally and Gweneth Lloyd. As Farrally and Lloyd founded the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Centre’s summer school became something of a training ground for dancers destined for this company. The Ballet Program soon became the highlight of the Centre’s summer programs, and today it is internationally renowned.

The Banff Centre is establishing an endowment, in celebration of the 60th anniversary, to sustain the Dance program’s future. Endowment funds are gifts that endure in perpetuity and provide stable sources of funds that remain with the organization. It is The Banff Centre’s intention to apply for matching funds from the Federal Government through the Canadian Arts & Heritage Sustainability Program.
