World Premiere

The Banff Centre's Theatre Arts program, with the support of the France/Canada/Banff Fund, is pleased to announce a collaboration between Ballet British Columbia and French choreographer Myriam Naisy. The project brings the choreographer and company to Banff for a five-week residency to create a new piece that will premiere August 8, 10, 13, 15, in Eric Harvie Theatre as part of the Festival Dance presentation during the Banff Arts Festival.

Myriam Noisy, formerly artistic director and resident choreographer at the Tanz Theatre in Zurich, lives in Aix en Provence and works as a guest teacher and choreographer throughout Europe and North America. During the 1996/97 season she set new work on: Les Ballet Jazz de Montrèal; herself and Jean-Charles Gil for the Theâtre Municipal de Lausanne; Ballet d'Avignon; Ballet Hungarian; and Canadians Anik Bissonnette, Gioconda Barbuto and Luc Robitaille at Theâtre d'Audjourd'hui in Montrèal. Winner of the 1988 Maurice Bejart prize, her choreography is now in the repertoire of the Ballet du Nord in France, Ballet National de Nancy, the BÈjart Ballet Lausanne and the Ballet Jazz of Montreal.

Ballet British Columbia, under the artistic direction of John Alleyne, is rapidly gaining attention as the cradle of invention for classical ballet in North America. The 16-member company is recognized as much for its dancers¹ abilities in dramatic interpretation as for their technical strength and precision. Repertoire includes work by such eminent choreographers as William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian and Canadians Serge Bennathan and James Kudelka. Naisy¹s piece will enter the Ballet BC repertoire in time for their 1997/98 season¹s performances and tour.
