In April, 2010, The Banff Centre was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Arnold Spohr, former co-head of the Centre’s dance programs (1968-1981), and artistic director of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for 30 years. Through his creativity, dedication, and artistic genius, Mr. Spohr left an indelible mark on the history of dance in Canada and at The Banff Centre. We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Spohr’s many friends and colleagues at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and across Canada.
Arnold Spohr advised young dancers “If you want to learn, then learn from the best.” Those words are the inspiration behind the Arnold Spohr Distinguished Guest Artist Endowment for Dance.
In memory of Arnold Spohr’s legacy, the 2010 summer dance season will be dedicated in his honour.
In celebration of The Banff Centre’s 75th anniversary and over 60 years of dance, the Centre established an endowment fund in 2008 in the name of legendary dancer and artistic director, Arnold Spohr. The Fund is creating a legacy of world-class learning, mentorship, and creative mastery in dance by bringing internationally renowned guest artists to The Banff Centre to instruct promising dancers who attend The Banff Centre’s programs.
