Quoting Commercialism

Curator: Chris Reid

Quoting Commercialism features work by Canadian artists Shinobu Akimoto (Toronto), Greg A. Hill (Ottawa), Mitch Robertson (Toronto) and Jan Wade (Vancouver).

Quoting Commercialism, curated by Chris Reid, endeavours to reveal how, and to what extent, four artists from different cultural backgrounds construct their individual personas and exert their identities within a multicultural, consumerist society. Using puns and play they offer a cross cultural perspective on the influence of media and advertising in the age in which we live. The result of Reid's inquiry is an exhibition of work that is wrought with wit, irony and guile.

The common thread of Quoting Commercialism is that each artist employs aspects of consumer culture, through found objects and ready-mades in their work. Everything from facsimiles of packaging, souvenirs, and catalogue pages to the actual items themselves make their way into the exhibition. At the same time, they use different aspects of the promotional industry in distinctly different ways and for markedly different purposes. This exhibition includes a diverse range of media including sculpture, drawing, and digital photographs.

Quoting Commercialism was co-produced with the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba.
