Reading History Backwards
Gisele Amantea
Curator: Anthony Kiendl
August 8 - October 12, 2003
In this exhibition Montreal artist Gisele Amantea presents a recent work, "The King v. Picariello and Lassandro." The installation explores how historical narratives are very much dependent upon subjective impressions, assumptions, and stereotypes. In a series of 14 large collaged drawings and photographs, Amantea investigates the life of Filumena "Florence" Lassandro; an Italian immigrant to southern Alberta who, convicted of murder, was one of the last women hanged in Canada. A film on the same subject, conceived in part while the artist was in residence at The Banff Centre, will be exhibited for the first time.
Among the other works in the exhibition is the installation, "Do I What?", a work that combines sound and pattern based on Chantilly lace. In it ntea covers the gallery walls with an intricate and stunning design produced by the artist in flocked wallpaper that will overwhelm the viewer with its intensity and visual impact.
This exhibition coincides with the new Canadian opera Filumena by John Estacio and John Murrell.
