Bungalow Blitz
Curated by Aoife MacNamara
August 28 - October 31, 2004
Bungalow Blitz examines how, and to what extent, public knowledge and understanding of architecture is shaped by the ways in which it is represented through photography, exhibitions and drawing. The project also explores how the architectural and heritage industries deal with planning and design for human settlements in areas of outstanding natural beauty. In other words, who decides what and where people can build their homes in areas of national and international significance. Here Banff offers an interesting comparative study to recent developments in Ireland, where the curator was raised. Three artists, Paul Antick, Jim Grant and Andrew Kearney, were commissioned to produce work in response to the same set of bungalows in South West Donegal, Ireland. The resulting work, in installation, photography and drawing, is intended not to provide any answers to what these buildings mean and why, but rather to explore how the same building represented in different ways might produce quite different knowledge and response.
