Curators: Yvonne Force & Carmen Zita
PICT is a group exhibition featuring works that explore new perspectives on technology and computer-based art through digitally inspired paintings.
The personal computer has had a dramatic impacton contemporary society, perhaps no less influential than the concept fo perspective during the Renaissance. Technology has not only revolutionized our way of performing tasks, but has also changed our perception, providing us with a new landscape, a new aesthetic. This exhibition of artists presents the relationship between technological advances and traditional painting.
Artists Matthew Antezzo, Pedro Barbeito, Miltos Manetas, and
Julain Opie draw inspiration from the technological tools of
computers, citing them as both vehicles for expression and
fodder for new subject matter. Jeff Elrod, Carl Fudge, Wayne
Gonzales and Monique Prieto each design the composition and the
palette of their paintings and then morph the reality of an
image through the use of the computer. PICT also includes
work such as computer-generated oil-jet paintings by Jack
Pierson, a projected "virtual" painting on DVD by Jeremy Blake,
and works by precursory pioneer of digital painting, Peter
Halley.
PICT was curated by Yvonne Force and Carmen Zita.
Their other curatorial projects include:
- SHOW, featuring Vanessa Beecroft, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum 1998
- SHOW part 2, featuring Doug Aitken, Fondation Cartier Paris 1998
- Contemporary Artists from China, Lehmann Maupin Gallery, NY 1998
- BELIEF Billboard, featuring Jessica Diamond
