May 4:  Michael Winter and Edna Alford

Michael Winter Michael Winter is the author of The Big Why and his short story “The Point David Made Earlier” won the CBC Literary Prize.

Edna AlfordEdna Alford is the award-winning author of two collections of short fiction, A Sleep Full of Dreams and The Garden of Eloise Loon. She is the associate director of fiction and other narrative prose for the Writing Studio.

May 11:  Helen Humphreys and Tim Bowling

Helen HumphreysHelen Humphreys is the author of four collections of poetry and four novels.

Tim Bowling is the author of two novels and six collections of poetry.

May 16:  Don McKay

Don McKay is the associate director of poetry for the Writing Studio and the two-time winner of the Governor General’s Award for Poetry.

May 18: Rachel Wyatt

Rachel Wyatt is this year’s Writing Studio distinguished guest. She is the author of five novels and four collections of short stories. Her stage plays have been produced across Canada as well as in the U.K. and the U.S. She is a member of the Order of Canada and was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee medal in 2003. She was director of the Writing Programs at The Banff Centre until 2001.

May 25: Colin McAdam and Anne Simpson

Colin McAdam’s novel Some Great Thing was nominated for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction, the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, and the Amazon/Books in Canada First Book Award.

Anne Simpson’s most recent poetry collection, Loop, was awarded the 2004 Griffin Poetry Prize.

June 1: Anita Rau Badami and Greg Hollingshead

Anita Rau Badami is the author of two critically acclaimed, bestselling novels, Tamarind Men and The Hero’s Walk. She is a winner of the Marian Engel Award and the Commonwealth Prize for the Caribbean-Canada region.

Greg Hollingshead is the director of the Writing Studio. He has published three novels and three story collections and is the winner of the Governor General’s Award for Fiction and the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize.


Banff Book Discussion Weekend Reading

Alistair MacLeod

Each year, the Banff Book Discussion Weekend invites a writer for a public reading. This year we present one of Canada’s favourite writers — Alistair MacLeod. After great success with short stories, MacLeod’s first novel No Great Mischief was published to critical acclaim and was nominated for all of Canada’s major literary awards. This success was followed by the release of Island, which collects all of MacLeod’s previously published short stories with one new story.


Creative Writing in Mathematics and Science Public Reading

Join us for an evening of readings by participants in the Creative Writing in Mathematics and Science program co-hosted by the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) and The Banff Centre. John Vaillant has written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, National Geographic — Adventure, Outside, and Men’s Journal. His book The Golden Spruce: A True Story of Myth, Madness and Greed was published in 2005 to much acclaim.

Nelofer Pazira July 17: "Trans(form)ation: the intersection of personal and political stories from print to the big screen" 
Nelofer Pazira is a journalist, actor, and author. She starred in the movie Kandahar which was based on her life story. She has since filmed a pair of documentaries about Iran, written for a variety of publications, and founded the Dyana Afghan Women’s Fund to provide education and skills training for Kandahari women. Her first book, A Bed of Red Flowers, is a moving memoir.

SullivanJuly 24: Villa Air-Bel and The Road Out: A Collaboration
Rosemary Sullivan is the MacLean Hunter Chair of the Literary Journalism program. She is the author of ten books including Cuba: Grace Under Pressure; Labyrinth of Desire: Women, Passion and Romantic Obsession; and the national best seller The Red Shoes: Margaret Atwood Starting Out. Sullivan is also the winner of the Governor General’s award for her biography Shadow Maker: The Life of Gwendolyn MacEwen.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Mexican author Elena Poniatowska Amor is unable to attend this evening's Literary Journalism Conversation. In her place, Maclean Hunter Chair, Rosemary Sullivan reads an excerpt from Elena Poniatowska Amor's work. Sullivan is joined by four distinguished participants of the Literary Journalism program who will each read a short section of the work they are creating while here at The Banff Centre.
