Out Innerspace Dance Theatre challenges preconceptions of contemporary dance with a brand new exciting and visually arresting performance in Major Motion Picture developed during a Performing Arts Residency here at The Banff Centre.

Major Motion Picture explores timely themes of surveillance, territory, propaganda and belief through eccentric and lawless characters. Their hybrid performance language includes infrared technology and an on-stage surveillance system alongside OIS’s trailblazing movement invention. Seven dancers fight for the theatre, losing and gaining the grounds for their power, identity and desire. With influences ranging from Charlie Chaplin to Die Antwoord, Orson Welles to Slavoj Zizek, the music of Bernard Herrmann meets urban underground and an original composition by Belgian producer Tristan Vloeberghs.

“Unlike anything you’ve ever seen…suffice it to say you’ve never seen movement like this, or characters like this, on a dance stage before.” (Janet Smith, Georgia Straight)

Out Innerspace Dance Theatre is devoted to creating exciting and integral contemporary dance works. Determined to be innovative yet accessible, they push beyond traditional aesthetics and forms with unreserved ingenuity. Through research and experimentation, OIS celebrates the importance of challenging the preconceptions of what can be expected, experienced and expounded in contemporary dance.

The Banff Centre offers a range of workspaces and facilities depending on participants' needs and availability. Artists can create in our dance studios, performance venues (including two theatres and a cabaret-style club), and theatre production and design shops (set, costumes, lighting, and sound).
