Banff Artist in Residence 2D - Fall 2021
Program Information

Overview
The Banff Artist in Residence program is designed for visual artists to focus on their practice in a supportive learning environment. Participants are encouraged to self-direct their research and time, as well as cultivate new directions in their work. The experience of artists in residence is further supported through individual studio visits with guest faculty and dialogue amongst peers.
Banff Artist-in-Residence (BAiR) 2D is a program for artists working in the mediums of analog and digital photography, drawing, printmaking, painting and paper making. Access to the Photography, Printmaking, Papermaking, and Digital Media production facilities will be available, as well as the Woodshop. The program encourages experimentation via access to shared production facilities and knowledgeable staff who are available to provide technical support and assistance.
Participants have the opportunity to receive studio visits from program guest faculty and engage with the exhibitions and programming taking place at Walter Phillips Gallery. In addition, participants can share their work with other artists-in-residence, the broader Banff Centre community and the public.
What does the program offer?
The Banff Artist in Residence 2D program allows participants to delve deeply into their practice while away from the constraints of everyday life. Participants are provided with a studio, accessible 24 hours a day, as well as access to our extensive facilities.
What length of residency is available?
This program is designed for participation over the entire program period. Variable dates will not be considered.
Who should apply?
This residency is for visual artists with an exhibition/publication record, who have completed formal training in visual arts at the post-secondary level, or equivalent experience and recognition from their peers.
Please note: As we re-open campus and welcome artists back to programming in a safe and mindful way, we have made the difficult decision to restrict recruitment for on-campus programs to those currently residing in Canada. We continue to monitor the situation closely and look forward to the future relaxation of travel measures that will allow us to welcome international artists once again.
What's Included
Your program fee includes a single bedroom on the Banff Centre campus for the duration of your program.
Get connected with other artists on campus and focus on your projects in a creative environment while we take care of the day-to-day essentials.
The Full Flex meal plan includes breakfast, lunch and dinner in Vistas Dining Room.
Create in one of our specialized studios and utilize shared production facilities in printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, photography, digital media, and more (subject to additional fees). Collaborative groups share studio space.
Fees & Financial Assistance
Application fee: $65. ($35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous)
Please note that as of September 1, our application fee reverted to the pre-pandemic level of $65. Applications received on or before 31st August will be charged at $25. Application fees are not refundable.
Individual group members must pay an additional registration fee of $35 on acceptance.
*Financial Aid of 100% is available to cover tuition, and Financial Aid of 50% is available to offset food and accommodation costs.

Banff Centre will issue official tax receipts for eligible tuition fees and financial assistance and awards as required by the Income Tax Act. You will receive a T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate) for eligible tuition fees paid and a T4A (Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income) for applicable financial assistance and awards.

Note for Collectives: A group leader must complete a single application and upload supporting materials on behalf of the whole group. Visual support materials should be provided for the collective; individual resumes and bios should be provided for each member. Groups no larger than two people will be considered for this program.
Adjudication
Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program.
Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete.
Eligibility
Please note as of September 20th in response to the Province of Alberta new COVID-19 regulations Banff Centre has opted into the Restriction Exemption Program so we are able to remain fully open.
We wish to advise you that if you are accepted to attend the program you will be asked for print or digital proof of vaccination, or a negative COVID-19 rapid test (within 72 hours prior to your arrival on campus), or medical exemption, in order to check-in and access services.

All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
