Seek retreat from the everyday and engage in an international community of artists from all disciplines for an intense period of creativity that defines summer at Banff Centre. BAiR Summer 2018 is a self-directed program in visual arts offering the space, time, and inspiration in which to make new work.
What does the program offer?
This program offers five weeks of intensive studio time and opportunities for interaction, collaboration, and experimentation. Demonstrations in visual art production techniques will be offered, and our knowledgeable staff will be on hand to offer support and provide access to our world-class facilities. Take advantage of attending public talks by faculty and artists from around the world who join us in the summer months, or retreat with dedicated time to work in your studio.
What length of residency is available?
This program is designed for participation over the entire program period. Variable dates will not be considered.
Who should apply?
This program invites visual artists working in all mediums including ceramics, photography, printmaking, sculpture, digital technology, performance, video, and sound. Curators, researchers, and other arts professionals are also welcome.

When applying, choose between staying in a single or a shared bedroom on the Banff Centre campus for the duration of your program.

Using a credit-based system to dine on campus, our flexible meal plans allow you to select meals according to your own needs during your stay.
The Light Flex meal plan includes $21 credit per day, equivalent to breakfast and lunch in Vistas Dining Room.
This program offers opportunities to showcase your work-in-progress in our Project Space. If attending during the final week of the program (August 20-24), you can participate in our public open studios event in Glyde Hall.
A series of outstanding guest artists and curators will give free public talks and hold informal discussions. Lecture Series talks are available on iTunes U.

Fees & Financial Assistance
Application fee: $65 for each individual or group application. Group members must pay an additional registration fee of $35 on acceptance.
*Financial Aid up to 100% is available to cover tuition (meal plans and accommodations are not eligible).

How to Apply
Collaborative Groups: a group leader must complete a single application and upload supporting materials on behalf of the whole group. Visual support materials should be provided for the collective, individual resumes and bios should be provided for each member. Collaborative groups share studio space.
Detailed Project Proposal and Timeline
In 500 words, describe the framework of your proposed project in relation to the residency theme, your weekly execution plan, details of the mediums you propose to use and your level of knowledge in the processes required, and outline any specific technical or support requirements.
Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program.
Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete, approximately eight to 10 weeks following the application deadline.
Residencies are for artists, curators, and other arts professionals with an exhibition record who have had formal training in visual arts, or equivalent experience and recognition from their peers.
All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of Banff Centre.
