OverviewGather to share, develop and challenge jazz and creative music ideas and abilities with program participants from around the world. A stellar faculty of world-renowned musicians, innovators, leaders and thinkers present master classes, lectures, workshops, informal sessions and collaborative concerts.
What does the program offer?
Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music focuseson improvisation, composition, listening, ensemble playing, history, theory, critique, creative concepts and connections to other genres, fields and disciplines. Participants and faculty put it all to the test in musical performance. Artists play together, collaborate, try out new music in club and concert settings and make live and studio recordings.
Participants are assigned to a large ensemble each week. Each ensemble is coached by one of the week’s faculty. Daily activities consist of workshops and talks given by faculty, as well as rehearsals, masterclasses, jam sessions and performances on Banff Centre stages.
Performances are curated in collaboration with the Artistic Director and faculty. Recording studio time is also available. Studio time is for demo recording purposes only, with participants chosen by the Artistic Director. Instruments available are pianos, keyboards, upright basses, and drum kits. Access to other percussion and keyboard instruments can be facilitated with prior notice.
Who should apply?
This program is designed for emerging or established musicians looking to open new creative horizons, challenge themselves artistically, or refine their skills with a world-class faculty. Participants will also be assigned weekly to ensembles coached by the faculty.
Your program fee includes a shared bedroom on the Banff Centre campus for the duration of your program.

Using a credit-based system to dine on campus, our flexible meal plans allow you to select meals according to your own needs during your stay.
The Regular Flex meal plan includes $29 credit per day, equivalent to lunch and dinner in Vistas Dining Room.
Recording opportunities will be offered throughout the program as assigned by the Artistic Director and faculty.
This program offers opportunities to showcase your work in one of our performance venues.
Your program fee includes free access to the swimming pool, climbing gym and fitness suite as well as discounted rates for classes at the Sally Borden Fitness and Recreation Centre.
Enjoy special artist rates for ticketed performances or complimentary access to events.

Financial Aid up to approximately 60% is available for this program.

How to Apply
Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program.
Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete.
Participants must be at least 16 years of age.
All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
