Concert in the 21st Century
Concert in the 21st Century is designed for classical musicians or ensembles to have an opportunity to work with highly experienced professionals who are engaged in presenting classical music today.
Take a closer look at the existing concert format and explore new ways to present classical and contemporary music. If you are a musician who wants to go beyond the traditional concert experience, this program is an ideal fit.
Visiting faculty in previous years have included performing artists such as conductor Robert Spano; violinist and director of chamber music at Spoleto Festival USA, Geoff Nuttall; and actor Daniel Pettrow. Faculty have also included arts administrators such as president and CEO of Washington Performing Arts, Jenny Bilfield; director of Verbier Festival Academy, Stephen McHolm; and New York Times music critic Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim.
What does the program offer?
Gain the the time to think and create, the opportunity to consult one-on-one with faculty members and participate in lively discussions, and be immersed in concert in the 21st century. The residency will offer workshops on pitching projects to presenters and funders, and marketing concert programs. You will also have the opportunity to work with Banff Centre’s Media + Production department on a short promotional video about yourself and your work.
Building on previous innovative residencies with Pedja Muzijevic, Concert in the 21st Century offers an informal, nurturing though intense, learning environment for participants to gain skills in concert curation and making important performance decisions. These decisions include:
- concert lengths
- performer placements
- overall concert experience
- video documentation
In addition, space and technical support will be available for a limited number of classical music collectives coming with interdisciplinary artists such as dancers, actors, lighting designers, or video artists.
Who should apply?
We welcome applications from musicians who want to learn about concert presentation and curation, as well as musicians in the process of developing new innovative presentations for the stage. Chamber music groups are also welcome to apply.

When applying, choose between staying in a single or a shared bedroom on the Banff Centre campus for the duration of your program.

Using a credit-based system to dine on campus, our flexible meal plans allow you to select meals according to your own needs during your stay.
The Regular Flex meal plan includes $30 credit per day, equivalent to lunch and dinner in Vistas Dining Room.
Create in one of our specialized music studios or huts.
Demo recordings: You will have the option to record up to 30 minutes of music at a reduced rate as part of your program. These recordings are intended to be used for auditions or personal promotion, not for commercial purposes.
Studio recordings: Due to the focus of this residency, full commercial recordings cannot be integrated into this program.
This program offers opportunities to showcase your work in one of our venues on scheduled performance dates.
Access a wide range of publications, books, music, and films in the Paul D. Fleck Library and Archives, open six days a week.
Enjoy special artist rates for ticketed performances or complimentary access to events.
Fees & Financial Assistance
Application fee: $65 for individuals or groups. Individual group members must pay an additional registration fee of $35 on acceptance.
*Financial Aid up to 65% may be available to cover tuition (meal plans and accommodation are not eligible)

How to Apply
Please note this program accepts both individual and group applications.
For group applications, only the leader must complete a single application and upload supporting materials on behalf of the whole group. Supporting materials must include individual resumes and a single project proposal for the collective.
- Submit a sample representative of your work on audio or video support. It is your responsibility to demonstrate the full scope of your capability by selecting contrasting works. If possible, please include one live recording. Indicate the title, composer, performer(s), and date of recording for each work.
- Pre-formed ensembles must submit group recordings.
- Recording and videos submitted should have been completed no more than 12 months prior to the application deadline.
- There is a limit of three audio/video files within the tool.
Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program.
Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete.
All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
