Overview

The Final Tuning dance residency provides two choreographers or dance companies with the time, space, and resources to advance an already developed work to the next stage.

The selected companies will receive access to a Banff Centre dance studio for 3 weeks. In the first week with support of our Director of Dance Training, Alejandro Ronceria and visiting Faculty, you will work on adjusting and solidifying the proposed project in the studio. During the second and third weeks, artists will have access to our newly renovated mainstage, the Jenny Belzberg Theatre, to begin implementing technical elements into the projects and work with our production teams.

To conclude the residency you will present a 60 minute work or work-in-progress to the public.

What does the program offer?

You will receive the support of Banff Centre’s dance faculty and production teams in applying final production elements to your existing project including lighting, live sound, projection, etc. Projects will enjoy hands-on engagement with the faculty - dramaturgy, choreography, sound composition, and other design – to assist in fine-tuning your work in progress to present a final production for a public audience.

Participants will gain experience honing their technical communication skills to see their vision from the imagination phase to the page and to the stage. This is a great experience to fine tune a show that may be looking to tour to a variety of venues.

Companies will also have the option to receive professional production photographs taken of the project to add to a portfolio.

Who should apply?

Emerging and/or established choreographers and established dance companies, working in any form, who are seeking to work on the finishing touches of their projects. You should have a project and 60-90 minutes of choreography almost entirely developed and want to work on layering in elements of lights, projections, sound, etc. to do a production of it on the stage. You are expected to have been working with a composer at this stage of the process and should be arriving with a developed score for their public performance at the end of the program.

We can only accept dance companies with up to 25 artists. Final Tuning invites applications from anywhere in the world, and artists of all ages, backgrounds, gender identities, and expressions.

Technical Requirements

Participants will have access to the Jenny Belzberg Theatre’s house lighting plot (with specials). Consideration will be given to pieces that can work festival style as we will be presenting, rehearsing, and tech’ing in rep. Selected companies will have to work within production deadlines, and with the allotted crew and technical resources available. You are expected to have been working with a composer at this stage of the process and should be arriving with a developed score for their public performance at the end of the program.

Banff Centre will not be able to build any new wardrobe pieces for your project but we will be able to assist with sourcing elements from our inventory. We will not be able to build any scenic elements for your project but can assist with rigging minimal elements that you bring with you as part of your performance.

Travel and shipping costs for any set, costume, instruments, materials, etc. will be at the cost of the artists. Please consider this when looking at the overall scope of your proposed project.
