Overview

This workshop-based online program focuses on providing structured support for new fiction writers wanting to improve their writing skills.

What does the program offer?

An energizing, transformative experience designed to help participants take their fiction to a new level, this program is a perfect entry point into Banff Centre’s full suite of Literary Arts programs. This program offers new writers of fiction the opportunity to work on a portion of a manuscript in a workshop setting with editorial faculty. Three faculty work closely with 7 participants each and the residency provides teaching from faculty members, Q&A sessions, and one-on-one workshoppingInstructors will discuss ideas, experiences, and obstacles that participants may be encountering with their new manuscripts and emerging practices.  

The program will help writers build their critical vocabulary, making them better critics of their own and others’ work. Participants will also learn more about the craft of writing, and about the conventions and possibilities for innovation in fiction.

Merit – not means – drives opportunity at Banff Centre. Participants in this program will receive 100% scholarship for tuition.

Who should apply?

Any new writer of fiction interested in structured feedback from faculty and fellow participants will benefit from this program. The program is open to writers with no publications, a few publications, or even a first book.

Writers from all backgrounds, and all gender identities and expressions working in fiction are encouraged to apply.

Itinerary

7-day synchronous Zoom sessions. On-line lectures and workshops with embedded Q&A sessions.

The sessions will open with an orientation session followed by talks and Q&A sessions by each faculty member, a round-table discussion and 5 days of short one-on-one meetings, and then a closing reflective session on the final day.

Saturday Aug 28 – 1:00-2:00 MDT: orientation/welcome session
Sunday Aug 29 -- 12:00-4:00 MDT: faculty talks and Q&A sessions
Monday Aug 30 through Friday Sept 3: individually scheduled one-on-one sessions between faculty and participants
Friday Sept 3 1:00 MDT: roundtable/exit session

Cover Letter

A one-page cover letter explaining why you are interested in this program, what you hope to achieve by attending it, and how the program theme relates to your practice.

Resume

A one-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant creative experience.

Project Summary and Bio

Provide a 1-page summary of the proposed project and a bio of no more than 100 words. These summaries will be used as a narrative for administrative and public use.

Portfolio

 One writing sample not exceeding 5 pages in total. The sample should be from the proposed project.

Emerging Writers Intensive only accepts projects that are being written in English.

Adjudication

Participants are selected by impartial adjudication on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program. 

Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete.

This program is not open to applicants who have taken part in a Banff Centre residency in the last year, to previous EMERGING WRITERS INTENSIVE participants, nor to current faculty members of any other Banff Centre programming.

All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
