Evolution: Quartet is a highly specialized, two-week program that provides early-career string quartets and composers the opportunity to enrich their approaches to interpretation, performance practice and composition. Working with faculty in a unique educational environment that considers the entire lineage of the genre as a constantly evolving whole, participant ensembles are able to hone their craft, identify gaps, and reconsider priorities as they work towards cultivating the artistic attributes that define their ensemble. 

Led by the internationally celebrated Eybler, Parker, and JACK string quartets, the Evolution: Quartet mentor group is further reinforced by an extraordinary cohort of scholars, composers and instrumentalists. Participants will explore the early string quartet, with sessions on intonation, harmony, and structure, as well as in-depth discussions on style and rhetoric. Repertoire from the traditional canon will be studied and performed alongside contemporary works presented by faculty artists. Public performances will feature a full breadth of string quartet repertoire including new works by participant composers and guest faculty. 

What does the program offer?

In 2022 Evolution: Quartet is being limited to six pre-formed string quartets and six composers. The program is led by three internationally celebrated faculty quartets with overlapping expertise in period performance, modern and contemporary practices. Participants will also have access to an unprecedented breadth of knowledge and performance experience, from composer Suzanne Farrin, musicologist Suzannah Clark, the Gryphon Trio and other guest mentors.

Daily presentations and faculty-led discussions will focus on intonation, quartet dynamics, affect and rhetoric, advanced rhythm, performing editions, structural analysis, introduction to neo-Riemannian theory, in-depth exploration of faculty composers' work and process, collaboration, right relations, and diversity/equity/inclusion. The residency includes on campus public performance opportunities, and performance and composition faculty will also offer coaching and private lessons.

The six participant composers will be paired with the quartets to create new works that will be premiered at the end of the program. Participant composers will work with faculty composer Suzanne Farrin, visiting composer Felipe Lara and the other Evolution: Quartet faculty, in a program that supports their full creation process from inception to premiere of a new work for string quartet. Composers will engage in an intensive and impactful process that allows them to learn from, and deeply invest in one another’s creative development. Composer/quartet rehearsals will take place on campus throughout the on-site program, and premieres will be featured in each participant quartet’s final performance. 

Prior to the July 10th commencement of the on campus program participant composers will work with composer mentor Suzanne Farrin in an on-line format to develop their compositions and prepare for the on-campus experience.

Demo recordings: you’ll have the option to record up to 30 minutes of music at a reduced rate as part of your program. These recordings are intended to be used for auditions or personal promotion, not for commercial purposes.

Studio recordings: commercial recordings can also be integrated into a music residency at normal rates.

Application fee: $65 for individuals or groups ($35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous)

Individual group members must pay an additional registration fee of $35 on acceptance. 

*Financial Aid of 100% is available to cover tuition, and Financial Aid of 50% is available to offset food and accommodation costs

Application fees are not refundable.

Banff Centre will issue official tax receipts for eligible tuition fees and financial assistance and awards as required by the Income Tax Act. You will receive a T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate) for eligible tuition fees paid and a T4A (Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income) for applicable financial assistance and awards.

Group applications: the group leader must complete a single application and upload supporting materials on behalf of the whole group.


A one-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience.

Sample of Work

Upload three samples of your groups artistic work. Examples should provide a portrait of your group and the breadth and diversity of your creative life.

Artistic Statement

A 500-word description of why you wish to attend this program, what you hope to learn, and what impact it could have on your artistic practice.

Financial Assistance

Be sure to complete the Financial Aid section to be eligible for financial assistance.

Additional Information:

  • If you are applying as an individual, you must complete both the online application form (including $65 processing fee) and a SlideRoom application.
  • If you are applying as an ensemble, the ensemble leader must complete both the online application form (including $65 processing fee) and a SlideRoom application. Please submit only one SlideRoom application per group. There will be a $35 registration fee of each member upon acceptance to the program.


Participants are selected by impartial artistic adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program.

Please note, application fees are non-refundable and go towards supporting the review of each program application and the adjudication process. All submitted applications are reviewed by a panel of adjudicators, and due to the competitive nature of Banff Centre’s programs, we do not provide feedback on applications or guarantee acceptances into programs. All applicants will be notified of their application status via email following adjudication.

All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
