PROGRAM FULL! WAIT LIST ONLY

Overview

The International Order of the Sword and Pen (IOSP) fosters an international community which shares openly with our fellows in a diverse exploration and exchange of techniques, processes, theories and practices as applied to combat for stage, screen, and the martial arts (both contemporary and historical) with open-mindedness, magnanimity and curiosity. The Paddy Crean Stage Combat Workshop is our flagship event held every two years where people from all over the world get together to share ideas and learn from local and international communities. Our goal at the Paddy Crean "Footsteps of Giants" workshop is to create a platform where artists old and new can come together and share ideas, pass on information from one generation to the next and understand how it is developed and enhanced with each successive generation. Participants will learn from different generations of practitioners and see how knowledge evolves as it passes from one person to another. No matter the experience level or age, at some point every single day, someone is the student and someone is the teacher, with both adding to their library of knowledge.

What does the workshop offer?

Topics to be covered in the workshop include:

  • Basic to advanced classes in any live action production such as live stunt shows, ballet, opera, musical and regular theatre.
  • Basic to advanced classes in film or video action sequences such as fighting for film, stunts (breakfalls, tackling, stairfalls, etc.), motion capture and directing action.
  • Basic to advanced classes in both historical and modern martial arts, as well as practical combat such as military styles, western martial arts, police tactics, and self defense.
  • Lectures on the different ways these disciplines all interact with each other and how we can share knowledge with each other to create new work.
  • The art of building and creating safe yet believable combat situations for stage and film.
  • Basic to advanced classes in any sort of weapon you can think of, including broadsword, rapier, dagger, knife, whip, chains, chairs, bottles, etc.

Who should attend?

Anyone who has at least a passing interest in physical action on film or stage. Our program is designed so that beginners and experts can work in tandem and mutually benefit each other. We are open to people of any level or skill who are interested in acting, directing, performing stunts, stage combat, practical application of combat techniques and any kind of physical theatre.
