Project Management for Indigenous Organizations
Project Management (PM) is an essential results-oriented management function of modern organizations, institutions, and communities—large and small. Understanding, proposing, and establishing a professional PM environment is critical to program and project funding development.
High achieving individuals and organizations know that adopting standardized PM processes, techniques, and tools greatly increases their capacity to ensure successful projects. Beyond the best-practices aspects of PM, this program explores developing your PM knowledge and skills in the context of Indigenous Wise-Practices—a critical factor. Learn to effectively lead projects to deliver the expected outcomes, on scope, on time, and on budget.
What does the program offer?
Participants will engage in: ceremony, in-person lectures, the outdoors, a creative arts practice, hands-on application of theory, individual reflection, and group activity.
The intensive one-week program will explore PM from a variety of perspectives, including:
• What is PM and why is it so important?
• The link between strategic planning and PM
• Understanding the difference between PM and operational management
• The PM profession, certifications, standards, frameworks, and methodologies
• PM fundamentals, processes, techniques, and tools
• The PM Triple Constraint
• PM technology applications (desktop and web-based mobile )
• Establishing an Indigenous Wise-Practices approach to PM
• PM planning techniques through a practical business case exercise
• Change management and performance management
• Implementing PM in your world: where to start?
Who should register?
This program is an ideal fit for those who are responsible for developing, leading, and managing projects in, or with, Indigenous communities and organizations—at all levels. The program will benefit anyone from Indigenous communities, government, industry, not-for-profits, and boards.
While an asset, no previous PM experience is required. The program would also benefit those seeking to understand PM, in general, to introduce PM practices into their organization or community, such as Chiefs and Councillors, nation administrators, and portfolio directors.
Please note, our programs are filled on a first come, first served basis. Please register early to secure a confirmation of your spot.
All Indigenous Leadership participants are provided private rooms with ensuite washrooms in one of our two onsite hotels, the Professional Development Centre or Lloyd Hall. Room upgrades may be available upon request at an additional cost.
All of your meals from the start to the end of your program are included; most of your meals will be at Vistas Dining Room, but there may be some special dining events scheduled as well. Please also feel free to visit the Maclab Bistro, Le Café, and Three Ravens Restaurant and Wine Bar, but note that these outlets are not included in your meal plan, and thus will be at additional cost.
The Paul D. Fleck Library and Archives are located on the 2nd floor of the Kinnear Centre, and provides access to great books, media, and work space.
The Sally Borden Fitness and Recreation Centre is located in the lower floor of the Sally Borden Building, and provides all guests with access to our swimming pool, hot tub, steam room, climbing gym, fitness centre, spin studio, and gymnasium. Massage and physiotherapy appointments may also be booked ahead of time.
Enjoy free parking, wifi, and access to the Walter Philips Gallery while you are a guest at Banff Centre. Fees & Financial Assistance
The above fees do not include applicable taxes, such as GST, the Alberta Tourism Levy, and the Tourism Improvement Fee as needed.
Enrol four members of your organization or community in a program and your fifth member will receive free tuition. Special restrictions may apply. Due to high demand, we accept a maximum of five members per group; this is to ensure our programming is accessible to everyone.
Financial Assistance may be available to subsidize some of the costs to attend your program.
Past participants of the Project Management for Indigenous Organizations program can register again, however will not be eligible for funding assistance.

All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Banff Centre reserves the right to cancel a program up to seven days prior to program start date if there is insufficient enrolment. All fees will be refunded. Please note that Banff Centre is not liable for any personal/travel expenses incurred.
